Lesson 3: Expressions of Time
People use different language when discussing time. You might hear someone say - 'In half an hour' or in '3/4 of an hour'. What do they mean?
An hour is 60 minutes in total. If you divide that by four (into quarters), you get 15 minutes.
So:
Quarter of an hour is: 15 minutes
Half an hour is: 30 minutes
Three quarters of an hour is: 45 minutes
An hour is: 60 minutes
When expressing time verbally or in written form, there are a number of ways to express the same actual time.
For example: 9:10 can be said as 'Nine - ten' or it can also be expressed as 'Ten past nine'.
One hour is 60 minutes and each 15 minutes can be expressed differently.
When 15 minutes of any hour has passed, it can also be expressed as 'Quarter past'. For example 9:15
or Quarter past nine.
When 30 minutes has past, this can be expressed as 'Half past'. For example 9:30 or Half past nine.
When 45 minutes has past, this can be expressed as 'Quarter to'. For example 9:45 or Quarter to ten.
Anytime from the first minute past an O'clock until 30 minutes past or half past can be referred as 'past'
For example: 10:07 can also be expressed as 'Seven past ten'
And anytime after 30 minutes past can be referred to as 'to'
For example: 10:35 can also be expressed as 'Twenty five to eleven.
There are three activities for you to complete, the first will recap on the reading the clock and putting time in order through a fun computer activity. The second will have you expressing time in two different forms, one in numbers, one in words. The final activity is quick and fun and gives you an opportunity to again test your new knowledge on reading time and time expression.

Your task is to read the clocks and express the times under each clock in two different forms.
Look at the first clock for an example.
